Dear Parents, Caregivers and Families,
We have started Term 3 at pace, already moving into week 4. Our children are happy and learning is occurring every day. Our flood recovery is well under way, as we have seen our Year Six classes and canteen all move back into their renovated and restored spaces. I thank the DLCS for their support during this still ongoing process. As we move through the term I expect the new Year Five classroom to be opened up and other smaller spaces to be back online.
As we enter the second half of the year, please be mindful of informing us of any diagnosis or change in family or medical conditions for your child. This helps us better understand individual needs and allows our records to remain current and accurate.
Uniform
A reminder that it is my expectation that all students wear full school uniform every day. I know that the cold weather is continuing at the moment, however, there is sufficient winter uniform options to ensure our children stay warm. Sports Uniform is only permitted to be worn on sports and PE days. Can we please ensure that students are wearing either full sports uniform or full academic uniform, not a mixture of both.
A reminder as well about our hair policy;
Hair accessories should be a plain design, small in size and in black, blue or white.
Hairstyle is a matter that invites good taste and judgement as to appropriateness. The school has particular expectations in regards to hairstyles, which are to be adhered to, and parents are asked to ensure that their child’s hairstyle conforms to the following;
- Hair should be neatly groomed and maintained at all times;
- Extremes in hairstyles are unacceptable
- Dramatic layered effect of levels are not permitted
- Hair should not be overly styled by the use of hair products
- Hair is not to be tinted or coloured in any colour. Natural hair colour only.
- Long hair must be kept neat and off the face. Long strands such as ‘rat’s tails’ are unacceptable as are dreadlocks, spikes, mohawks, mullets and shaved patterning.
The Principal has the final say as to the appropriateness of a hairstyle.
Teaching our students to be resilient
At this week’s assembly, I spoke to all students about resilience. I told them that resilience is the ability to bounce back from difficulties or hard times, and that resilience is a way of coping when things don’t always go the way we want them to, and is one of the key ingredients to success. Building resilience is all about maintaining a positive mindset, a willingness to grow, and an ability to learn from setbacks.
I talked to the students about how they experience a tremendous amount of physical and mental growth every day, and how being resilient gives them the ability to tackle new experiences and challenges, bounce back from setbacks, and have the best chance at succeeding.
I invite you to continue this conversation with your children.
I thank you for your support in regards to your child’s ongoing learning.

THOUGHTS FROM THE PRINCIPAL
To all of our dear St Joseph’s families, whether you are Christian or still questioning the presence of Christ, both in our world and in your life, please remember that it is family that binds you the closest to all things that you truly care about, and family which is forever the most valuable and irreplaceable. Choosing to share important moments with your family, is a direct acknowledgment of how important family is to you in your life. It is both family and faith that stabilises a community, shapes who we are, and instils us with the values that define what we consider to be normal and abnormal.
A shared Christian faith and its related values bind us all together and allows us to feel love, joy, peace, patience, kindness and goodness. It gives us something worthy to believe in, and something which teaches us how to be a responsible, loving and caring member of our community. One with purpose and lifelong hope. Christian faith is a way to acknowledge the importance of family and God in our community. Going to church does not necessarily, in my opinion, reflect how strong a person’s faith is, however, the physical action of attending church does reflect one’s faith through acknowledging the presence of God on Earth and the Holy Spirit within us.
There are certain times in our lives when reaching out to God for strength and safety feels really necessary, and these may be the times when you put in that little extra, and attend mass or pray. It does not have to be all the time. However, please know that if you are at a point in your life where you are not ready to pray, then God will wait for you.
Even if you don’t believe in Jesus, you can still live like Jesus, as Christian values are the fundamental characteristics of who God is, and the moral compass for everyday life. Do you not agree, that being kind, compassionate, forgiving, caring, and being a good person, is what we all should strive for? Is this not what we attempt to instil in our children in order for them to develop into fully rounded people with strong values and ethics?
Today it is more evident than ever that Christian faith is missing from our communities, nation and world. While we are constantly being told; that we don’t need faith to better our lives; that faith is old fashioned, and; that God isn’t real, just look around us. Are we handing over to our children a world that is better than the one we grew up in? Having God in your life should not be something we are ashamed or embarrassed of, nor something we apologise for.
Having God present in our lives, households, families, community and country, provides the moral framework and social cohesion that is very much missing right now.
NAIDOC CELEBRATIONS

MINI VINNIES WINTER APPEAL
PJ & Jersey Day
Thank you to our whole school community and supported this great cause.
To support the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal, we held a PJ & Jersey Day. This event allowed students to come to school in their pajamas or favourite jerseys for the day.
By participating, we raised funds for Vinnies. The donations will go towards helping people in our community who are experiencing poverty, homelessness, and disadvantage during the colder months. This initiative was a great way for our students to show compassion and support a worthy cause.

100+ DAYS OF KINDY
Celebrating their first 100 days of Kindergarten, students dressed in vibrant, bright clothing for a special "100 Days Brighter!" celebration.
To mark this exciting milestone, the Year 6 students presented their Kindergarten buddies with special commemorative tokens. This day was a wonderful way to acknowledge the learning and growth of the youngest students of our community.

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION
Attention Parents of Yr 3 Students
The Sacrament of Confirmation will be held on
Monday 22nd September 2024, at 5:30pm,
at All Saints Catholic Church, Kempsey.
In preparation, we are inviting parents and caregivers of Baptised Year 3 students to attend an information session on Tuesday 26th August, at All Saints Catholic Church, beginning with a special mass at 5pm followed by an information session held in the church at 5:30pm.
At the parent session Fr James will provide guidance and insight into this sacrament, how to support your child, choosing a Catholic sponsor for your child, as well as parish forms to be completed. If you are unable to attend please contact the school so we can make alternative arrangements.
Year 3 students are the year group that takes part in this Sacrament, however, if you are interested and your child is in year 4, 5, or 6 and would like to make their Sacrament, please contact the school.
Students will be engaging in a program during religion lessons at school to prepare and teach them about this Sacrament, and will also be engaging in a retreat experience here at school. Students will be bringing home a ‘Confirmation Student Workbook’ with some activities to complete at home.
The students will also be partaking in a Commitment Mass during school time where they pledge their commitment to learn about and participate in this Sacrament. All parents and families are warmly invited to attend.
Confirmation Commitment Mass, 9:30am, Friday 19th September, 2025.
As parents and caregivers, we ask that you support your child’s preparation by talking with them about the Sacrament of Confirmation, nurturing and building their understanding of the Sacrament and how it strengthens their faith through confirming the promises that were made at their Baptism.
What is Confirmation?
Confirmation has always been linked to baptism. Together with the Eucharist, it forms one of the three Sacraments of Initiation. Confirmation confirms what occurs in the initial and primary Sacrament of Baptism.
In the Sacrament of Confirmation the minister of the Sacrament lays hands on your child, prays over them on behalf of the Church family, and anoints them with chrism - sacred oil blessed by the Bishop the previous Easter. As the person is signed with oil the Bishop says, 'Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.' The actions of prayer, laying of hands and anointing with oil is a solemn and ancient gesture that can trace its roots back to the earliest Christian communities of the first century.
Confirmation is the sacrament through which the Holy Spirit is given in a special way to us. It is the sacrament of spiritual strength. The Holy Spirit is given for our spiritual strengthening, which is brought about in a most particular way through the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.
FEAST OF ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
On this Feast, Catholics traditionally celebrate Mary going to heaven. We remember how at the end of her life Mary was taken up to heaven to be with God. Mary is very special because she was chosen by God to be the mother of God's son, Jesus. There is an important difference between the ascension of Jesus into Heaven after His Resurrection, and the assumption of Mary. To ascend is to rise up under one's own power; while to be assumed means something that is done to one. Jesus, being the Second Person of the Trinity, had no need of assistance; whereas Mary did not have this power. The tradition is that 'God took Mary, body and soul, to heaven after her life on earth had come to an end'.

ZONE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
It was a cold Wednesday morning as thirty nine Joey’s kids walked through the gate to represent our school zone in Port Macquarie. It was a forty to forty five minute ride. As we arrived there were six schools awaiting us for a challenge. Then before we started we had a long good prayer then the games began.
First, we had the 1500m run, the hardest race of all. The juniors were up first. It was an epic battle against the six schools against us, then came the seniors. It was another hard and epic race.
Then came the 100m race. It was fantastic, juniors rushed out first competing like wild. Then came the seniors. The fastest people got ready to go to the finals.
Suddenly people rushed to the side lines cheering on the 200m runners for juniors. It was crazy. Then came the seniors. They were as quick as cheetahs.
Then it was long jump. People had one practice, then it was game on. People jumped as far as they could trying their best for seniors. Then juniors rushed out trying to get the farthest to represent their schools.
Suddenly seniors went first pushing the heavy metal sphere as far as they could. There were only two winners though. Then juniors came out and they were outstanding. The strength was amazing.
All of a sudden the seniors came back for more, but this was discus. It was amazing throwing it about 30m. Then came the juniors having an outstanding go at it.
