PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Families,
Father’s Day at St Joseph’s
The Friday prior to Father’s Day, the St Joseph’s staff put on a special Father’s Day BBQ lunch, activities and assembly to acknowledge our fathers and father figures. The afternoon was very busy with many of our dads turning up for a sausage sandwich or two. It was a great afternoon, and I thank all of our families who were able to participate. The kids love seeing mum and dad at school.
Parent School Partnership
St Joseph’s Staff, families and students were so lucky to have Karen Young visit the school and talk to us about strengthening the mental wellness of children and adolescents. Karen began her career as a psychologist in private practice and is now recognised as a leading authority on child and adolescent anxiety. She has worked extensively with children, teens, and families, in both educational and organisational settings. It is through her work that Karen learned the power of solid information when it is placed in the hands of loving parents and families.
Karen created ‘Hey Sigmund’, an internationally popular online resource, to provide contemporary, research-driven information on the art of being human, and being with humans. The website has a particular emphasis on strengthening the mental wellness of children and adolescents.
Karen is often invited to comment by media outlets, including The Project, and ABC Radio, and is the author of five books, including the bestselling ‘Hey Warrior’ and ‘Hey Awesome’, which creatively assist children to understand and manage anxiety.
I thank all of our families who participated in this great night, and all of our staff who kept the children amused with chocolate bingo and hotdogs.
Fruit Break at St Joseph’s
Each morning our students enjoy a small fruit snack as they begin the day.
At St Joseph’s, Fruit Break looks like fruit and vegetables which are ready to eat, such as carrots, celery sticks, broccoli, cherry tomatoes, snow peas, or easy-to-eat seasonal fruit such as a small apple, a container with hulled strawberries, a peeled mandarin or banana.
The following foods are NOT suitable during Fruit Break: fruit juice, fruit products such as roll-ups or straps, potato or veggie chips, fruit in syrup, popcorn, yoghurt, or messy fruits such as oranges, mangoes etc.
All students are asked to bring their Fruit Break in a reusable container to school each day. This container must be separate to their lunch box, as only the fruit break container is to come into the classroom.
I appreciate your support in this.
Wearing the correct uniform when representing the school
At St Joseph’s, we are very fortunate to have many opportunities for our students to participate in learning and sporting activities off the school grounds. While we love seeing our students enjoying sport and representing the School, and having the opportunity to do so, it is very important that the correct uniform is being worn to such events. Unless stated in the event information which is communicated to families and parents, all students are expected to wear the appropriate full school uniform to all events. Only students who present to a school event in the correct uniform will represent the School. Students not following school expectations will remain at school.
To all of our families, I thank you for your support in regards to your child’s ongoing learning.

THE TOUCH OF THE HEART
Within this weekend’s readings is the term in
scripture of “Do not be afraid”. Importantly this phrase of hope is expressed throughout our scriptures 365 times. Isaiah uses this phrase in presenting a God of compassion and love and that we take courage in this understanding. But Jesus always wanted us to know that no matter what we struggle with in life, Jesus is always there, coming to us in love, and will see us in hope towards the shores of God’s peace. It is in this coming to us in love that the gospel narrative this week leads us.
This account of the healing of the man born deaf is particular to the gospel of Mark. We are told that the person was brought to Jesus and that not only was he deaf but he had a problem with his speech. A fact which many would understand is the challenges of a person born without hearing. Jesus’ healing is not superficial, but has many and varied layers. Jesus could have healed the man immediately on the accounts of the people who had concern for him. However, he spent some quiet time with the man, possibly listening to his journey and his pain. It is through this pastoral encounter that healing begins.
The second point is within the word ephphatha. This word and action is carried through the Sacrament of Baptism, where the priest or deacon touches the mouth and ear of the child or candidate asking that they are open to hear God’s word and to share God’s word with others “May the Lord soon touch your ear to receive his word and your mouth to proclaim his faith.” This touch is important in the gospel account too. Jesus heals and communicates to the deaf person through the sense of touch which would have been the only way he understood his world. Jesus expresses not just profound understanding and compassion but also a deep sense of “do not be afraid” through this action. In essence, Jesus’ listening touched the ears of one who yearned to hear
Prayer
Lord, touch my ears to hear your voice and my mouth to tell others of your love.
Amen

KAREN YOUNG VISITS ST JOSEPH'S - PSYCHOLOGIST & AUTHOR
Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming the amazing psychologist and author Karen Young back to our school community. We had Karen visit earlier in the year to work with staff and share professional learning and the latest neuroscience in supporting big feelings and emotions in children, especially how to manage and overcome anxiety. This time we held a follow up session for staff, as well as a parent session, followed by students sessions. All the talks that Karen presented were incredible. She has a terrific ability to connect and engage her audience as she shares her knowledge and wisdom. A big thanks to all the parents and families who joined us, it was a great opportunity to learn more about ways to support our young people and children.
In the student sessions she explained the neuroscience behind the feeling of anxiety, and the normal humanness in feeling it. She demystifies the fear and stigma around ‘anxiety’ and instead unpacked the physiological symptoms that are present in the body when we feel anxious, ‘the superhuman body fuel’ that gets pumped around our bodies in response, and strategies that children can draw on to help calm, regulate and tackle new and brave experiences. She explains the part of our brain called the amygdala that is known as the feeling brain- the part that keeps us safe when in danger, getting us to react quickly and move to safety. She explained to the students that everyday we face lots of ‘scary-safe’ experiences, and even though our body might be feeling amped up from the ‘superhuman body fuel’, we can recognise when a situation is asking us to be brave. We will continue delving into learning around this and deepening students' understanding of ways to take charge of themselves and be the BOSS of their amygdalas to calm nerves and regulate their bodies so they can learn, grow and connect with others well.
This video can be found on Karen's website, Hey Sigmund and it explains ‘The House Model’. ‘The House Model’ is a way to think about our interactions and relationships, and how best to connect with the important people in our lives, including our children, to calm anxiety, regulate big feelings, move towards calm, and expand the capacity for brave behaviour.
YEAR 3 CONFIRMATION RETREAT
On Tuesday all Year 3 students participated in a wonderfully run Sacrament of Confirmation Retreat. We thank the Diocese of Lismore Regional Youth Ministers, Jacob and Jaz who have been working with our students, developing their knowledge and helping prepare them for this upcoming Sacrament. During the Retreat experience children learnt about and unpacked the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit and how they can live out these values in their daily lives, as well as engaging in song, prayer, reflection and fun games with peers. Each student took home a prayer card and candle and we thank again the wonderful Retreat leaders for sharing their knowledge, skills and faith with our students.
CONVERSATIONS ABOUT BULLYING
Having an open dialogue about bullying with your child is crucial for fostering trust,
understanding, and resilience. You could use this video from Bullying No Way as a
conversation starter.
Here are some tips for initiating and maintaining this important conversation:
- Ensure that your child feels comfortable and safe discussing sensitive topics like bullying. Choose a quiet, private setting where your child feels relaxed and free to express themselves without fear of judgment or reprisal.
- Be ready to manage your reactions.
- Start the conversation by asking open-ended questions that invite your child to
share their thoughts and experiences. For example, you could ask, "Can you tell me about what's been happening at school lately?" or "How are things going with your friends?" - Practice active listening by giving your child your full attention and demonstrating empathy and understanding. Avoid interrupting or dismissing their feelings, even if you disagree with their perspective. Reflect back on what they're saying to show that you're truly listening and validating their experience.
- Let your child know that their feelings are valid and that it's normal to feel upset or worried about bullying. Reassure them that they're not alone and that you're there to support them every step of the way.
- Focus on empowering them with knowledge and strategies for dealing with bullying. Help your child to brainstorm possible solutions or strategies to manage the situation. If your child is experiencing bullying or if the conversation reveals other issues, contact the school.
By fostering an open and supportive dialogue about bullying, you can help your child feel empowered, resilient, and equipped to navigate challenging situations with confidence. Starting the conversation about this topic should be grounded in your family's beliefs and values. Make sure you have early, regular conversations with your child about the values you have as a family regarding respect and care for others and the dignity of each human person.
What are your family values? How do you as a family provide healthy opportunities to grow in mutual love and respect?
SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION
Attention Parents of Year 3 Students
The Sacrament of Confirmation will be held on Monday 23rd September 2024, at 5:30pm, at All Saints Catholic Church, Kempsey.
Students will be engaging in a program during religion lessons at school to prepare and teach them about this Sacrament, and have also engaged in a retreat experience here at school. Students will be bringing home a ‘Confirmation Student Workbook’ with some activities to complete at home.
As parents and caregivers, we ask that you support your child’s preparation by talking with them about the Sacrament of Confirmation, nurturing and building their understanding of the Sacrament and how it strengthens their faith through confirming the promises that were made at their Baptism.
What is Confirmation?
Confirmation has always been linked to Baptism. Together with the Eucharist, it forms one of the three Sacraments of Initiation. Confirmation confirms what occurs in the initial and primary Sacrament of Baptism.
In the Sacrament of Confirmation the Minister of the Sacrament lays hands on your child, prays over them on behalf of the Church family, and anoints them with chrism - sacred oil blessed by the Bishop the previous Easter. As the person is signed with oil the Bishop says, 'Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.' The actions of prayer, laying of hands and anointing with oil is a solemn and ancient gesture that can trace its roots back to the earliest Christian communities of the first century.
Confirmation is the Sacrament through which the Holy Spirit is given in a special way to us. It is the Sacrament of spiritual strength. The Holy Spirit is given for our spiritual strengthening, which is brought about in a most particular way through the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.
ATTENDANCE INFORMATION
The Diocese of Lismore Catholic Schools have updated the procedures for monitoring and supporting schools to promote student attendance. Every school day builds upon the previous one, making it essential for students to attend regularly. Regular attendance is crucial as it fosters resilience and enables students to form vital social connections. Across all NSW education systems the expected level of student attendance is above 95%, and we aim to support all of our students to achieve this.
If your child’s attendance is below 90% you may receive a COMPASS communication in the coming weeks. We acknowledge that there may be many reasons for absences and you may have already provided information to the School about why your child has been away. However, this communication is to ensure all parents are aware that their child’s attendance is currently at or under 90%.
We believe that by working together, we can ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed. Please ensure you contact the School if you would like any support with your child’s attendance.

Students who need a School Bus Pass for 2024 can apply here. A new application will need to be submitted if they are applying for the first time, or if they are requesting additional travel entitlement because of a new shared parental arrangement (e.g. joint custody).
If a student’s distance eligibility has changed based on their grade (i.e. grade two to grade three), the system will automatically update their entitlement if they meet the new criteria. If they do not meet the new eligibility criteria, we will send them an expiry notification via email.
Students living in rural and regional (R&R) areas should receive their travel pass at the start of the new school year from their nominated transport operator. It may be given to the student as they board the bus for the first time in 2024 or be sent directly to them at home.
