Dear Parents, Caregivers and Families,
CELEBRATING MASS
From our last newsletter, the School has remained very busy with our learning and teaching. We celebrated Mother’s Day with a beautiful, yet energetic Mass. It was great to see so many mothers and motherly figures who could make it on the day to experience Mass with your children. Our student readers did a great job sharing the Liturgy of the Word, and all mothers were given a special flower to symbolise love, creation and life.
While celebrating Mass is a pivotal part of Catholic life, it is faith and family that binds us all together. I ask that we all remember the importance of having something worthy to believe in, something which teaches all of us how to be a responsible, loving and caring member of our community. Church is a way to acknowledge the importance of family and faith in our community. I remind all of our beautiful St Joseph’s families that faith is what stabilises a community, shapes who we are and instils us with values that define what we consider to be normal and abnormal. We should never be ashamed of our Catholicity. I hope to see you at Mass in the future.
“Let the little children come to me, do not stop them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Mk 10:13-14
ACADEMIC AND SPORTING OPPORTUNITIES
The School remains very busy with students participating in academic and sporting opportunities. Last week we competed in the da Vinci Decathlon at Port Macquarie, where our Year 5 team came 9th overall (out of 20 teams), and 2nd of the Year 5 teams. They also achieved a first overall for the English component. Our Science & Engineering Challenge students placed third in the combined school results. Well done to our Joey’s teams.
EMBEDDING EXTENSION & INTERVENTION INTO LEARNING
Ongoing literacy support programs continue to run throughout our learning weeks here at St Joseph’s. While many of these programs occur outside of the classroom, they are strongly linked to classroom learning outcomes, and help, support, encourage and improve student learning and growth. At St Joseph’s we understand the importance of both intervention and extension in enhancing the learning growth of all our students, allowing them to achieve their full potential across all subject areas.
KINDER CLASSES FOR 2025
I have started the interview process for our future 2025 Kinder students. It is exciting to see classes filling up so early in the year, which is great news for our schools continuing positive growth. The 2025 Enrolment application window will close on the 5th of July, so please put out the word.
OUR MOBILE PHONES & ELECTRONIC DEVICES POLICY
Bringing mobile phones and electronic devices (including; laptops, iPads, digital/video cameras, electronic games, smart watches etc.), to school, is strongly discouraged. The School takes no responsibility for the safety and security of these devices. For security purposes, mobile phones must be handed into the office before the 8:55am bell each day, and are to be collected after the 3:10pm bell. Students may leave their phones switched on and on silent in order for messages to be received by that device only. Smart watches and other devices worn or carried on a person, are not to receive messages or be data active during the school day. Any photographic or video material taken at School or at a School event must be used in an appropriate manner or else consequences may apply. This includes the use of a school device under staff instruction. Consequences will apply when students contravene this policy. Depending on the severity of the offence, consequences may include, detention, suspension or termination of enrolment. If a student’s Mobile phone or electronic device is seen and or heard whilst the student is under the Schools duty of care, an Assistant Principal will contact parents, informing them of the action and consequence. This policy aims to reduce class distraction and cyber bullying, control inappropriate access to social networking sites and help to manage potential legal and sensitive issues that may arise.
Parents and Caregivers, I am sure that you all agree how important is for the School to have complete control and knowledge of the information coming into the School and going out from the school. Therefore, I ask that all communications to and from your children, while they are at school, goes through the front office or through a member of staff.
As always, I thank you for your support in regards to your child’s ongoing learning and growth.

GOSPEL REFLECTION
Birth of Church (Pentecost Sunday)
Last weekend we celebrated Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost Sunday marks a pivotal moment in the Christian faith tradition, commemorating the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the Disciples, empowering them to spread the message of love and compassion to whole world. St Joseph’s celebrated this day along with our Parish community with a great Family Mass. I thank Mrs McGovern, Mr May, and Mrs Hart for ensuring our students were prepared for their roles during the celebration.
The Most Holy Trinity
We know that the Holy Trinity is the unity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, but have you ever thought that this Holy Trinity can also serve as a divine model of justice, compassion, and restoration? This offers us a profound insight into the nature of God’s relationship with humanity and the call to emulate these virtues in our own lives.
This dynamic interplay between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we witness a harmonious unity grounded in perfect justice. The Father’s righteousness, the Son’s sacrificial love, and the Holy Spirit’s transformative power combine to form a blueprint for a just and compassionate world. Justice, in this light, is not merely about punishment or retribution but is about seeking balance and harmony. Justice can never be separated from charity, for our spirit is an attunement ‘or awareness’ of human desires to God’s, in Christ’s self-giving love.
Just as the Trinity upholds the divine order, we are called to seek justice that honours the inherent dignity of every person and seeks to rectify injustices. Compassion flows naturally from this Trinitarian love. It is the fruit of the love and mercy between the Father and the Son. It inspires us to extend kindness and empathy to those in need. Restoration is the heart of the mission of the Trinity. Through the redemptive work of Christ and the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, all things are made new. We are called to participate in this work of restoration and become instruments of hope in a broken world.
We can look to The Most Holy Trinity, or every time we bless ourselves, and be reminded of this deep call to Service in Hope, and embrace our mission for justice, compassion and restoration. Reflections taken in part by Corinne Lindsell
The Holy Spirit transforms and renews us, creates harmony and unity, and gives us courage and joy for mission. – Pope Francis
PRAYER
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen

Students will be learning about this Sacrament during Religion lessons at school.
SCIENCE & ENGINEERING CHALLENGE
Last Thursday, several students from Stage 3 travelled to Melville High School to participate in the 17th Science and Engineering Challenge. Teams of 4 were presented with various problems that needed to be solved through scientific investigation, trial and error and engineering fundamentals.
Activities included Bridge Building, Wind Farm Propellor Design, Fish Trap design, Electrical Grid problem solving and aeroplane construction. Students had a fabulous time designing and making all sorts of models to test for strength, speed, aerodynamics and efficiency.
Although the day was a great deal of fun and learning there was also a competitive element to the challenge. Each team was scored on their success with a schools combined total contributing to final places. all the students from St Joseph's should be very proud of their collaboration in placing 3rd out of the 7 schools in attendance.
The Science and Engineering Challenge, originating here in Kempsey, is now in its seventeenth year and travels nationwide.
MNC REGIONAL DA VINCI DECATHLON

BUILD A HABIT OF GOOD ATTENDANCE
Being at school regularly helps children
School attendance is not only about academic
growth but also social and emotional development.
Here are several ways in which consistent attendance
contributes to the formation of meaningful and
supportive peer relationships:
- Shared Experiences. Regular attendance allows children to share common experiences with their peers. Being present in class provides opportunities for shared learning, activities, and interactions, fostering a sense of camaraderie.
- Consistent Social Interaction. Attending school every day provides consistent opportunities for social interaction with classmates. Regular face-to-face interactions contribute to the development of communication skills, empathy, and a sense of belonging.
- Building Trust and Reliability. Being present on a regular basis helps children build trust and reliability within their peer group. Dependable attendance creates a sense of predictability, and peers can rely on each other for mutual support and collaboration.
Meet the 2024 Student Representative Council (SRC)
Congratulations to the 2024 SRC Team, voted by their peers. The SRC provide a “voice for students”, which does not only mean talking on behalf of their class; it is about bringing issues to light, supporting fellow students and identifying and solving problems.
SRC Pledge
As the Student Representative Council of St Joseph's Primary School, we hereby pledge our commitment to the School. We pledge to;
- Faithfully represent and communicate the interests of the student body.
- Lead by example, by following the school rules at all times.

PUPIL FREE DAY - Friday 31st May, 2024
Dear Families,
A reminder that next Friday is a Pupil Free Day as St Joseph's Staff pariticpate in Proclaim. What is Proclaim?
The development of a personal connection to the person and vision of Jesus must be nurtured consistently and deeply in all Catholic schools so that there will be effective engagement in the transformative mission we are called to as Christians. In the Gospels, Jesus models love of others through: compassion, forgiveness, tolerance, advocating for justice and service to the poor and marginalised. His death was the fullest expression of his giving of himself to us, for us. He represented this self-giving in the words and gestures of the Last Supper: “Take this all of you, and eat it: this is my body, which will be given up for you” (Luke 22:19). Then he invited us to do as he does: “Do this in memory of me.” Jesus Christ is the stable principle and fixed centre of the mission that God himself has entrusted to humanity. We must all share in this mission (John Paul 11 Redemptor Hominis).Jesus’ message of the Kingdom of God must be enlivened in our Catholic schools through our systems, symbols and behaviours.
Jesus Christ is the central and pivotal value which guides and strengthens the other foundational values of: tradition, evangelisation, worship, witness, community and service which are integral to the Catholic identity and mission of our Lismore Parish schools.

NSW Premier's Reading Challenge 2024
The NSW Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is an initiative of the NSW State government. It aims to encourage in students a love of reading for leisure and pleasure and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student - to read, to read more and to read more widely.
This is an optional challenge that can be done at home. Students are welcome to borrow challenge books from the library during their class lessons, which our teacher librarians will identify for them. Throughout the year your child’s teacher may also log books for your child that have been read in class. Students can include any books read from the end of the 2023 challenge on their 2024 reading record. Key dates for the 2024 challenge are:
- 26 February 2024 - challenge opens for student entries
- Friday 23 August 2024 - challenge closes for student entries
- Friday 6 September 2024 - final date for coordinator validations of completed reading records.

If a student’s distance eligibility has changed based on their grade (i.e. grade two to grade three), the system will automatically update their entitlement if they meet the new criteria. If they do not meet the new eligibility criteria, we will send them an expiry notification via email.
Students living in rural and regional (R&R) areas should receive their travel pass at the start of the new school year from their nominated transport operator. It may be given to the student as they board the bus for the first time in 2024 or be sent directly to them at home.
NORTH COAST HEALTH CONNECT
North Coast Health Connect is a free new service providing health support and advice from registered nurses 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including public holidays. If you are a resident or visitor to the North Coast, you can speak or live chat with a nurse. The nurse will ask some questions to understand what’s troubling you and then provide advice on what your next step should be.
This may include self-care advice to help you to manage your health (or that of a loved one) from home, or the nurse may recommend a GP appointment or a consultation with a pharmacist. The nurses are able to book an appointment for you directly with a local general practice or pharmacy or if appropriate, can transfer you to a 24/7 GP telehealth service. If the nurse believes you need to attend an emergency department or see a different health service, they will let you know.
Visit https://northcoasthealthconnect.org.au/ for more info and save as a contact for when you need it by visiting https://qrco.de/bdkiJm or by scanning the QR code below.
